Simple Search
Your query will match anything in the subject, sender, or body fields. Below are some tips for improving your search results.
- Quoted strings
Surround a phrase in quotes to match that exact phrase.
Example: "computational linguistics" - Negation with minus sign
Prepend a minus sign to a word to exclude it from your search.
Example: computational -linguistics
Sorting your results
You can sort the search results by subject, date, or sender. Simply click the appropriate heading of the search-results list. Clicking the same heading reverses the sorting order.
Setting the number of hits to display per page
Click on the "10," "20," or "50" links to set the number of links to display per page.
Advanced Search
The query rules (quoted strings and minus signs) are the same as for Simple Search, but Advanced Search allows you to specify which fields you want to search, as well as a specific range of dates.
- Sender
- Specify words in the sender field of the post (i.e. search for a specific poster)
- Date
- Dates are in YYYY-MM-DD format. Specify a date sent, and optionally a "to" date. If you only specify a single date, posts for that date are retrieved. If you specify two dates, posts between that date range are retrieved.
- Subject
- Specify words in the subject field of the post
- Body Words
- Specify words in the body of the post
Threading
The Discussions feature uses threading information in the mailing-list posts. Unfortunately, the threading information was stripped from the headers of all emails up to April 2006, so it's not possible to show discussions involving those posts. I'll be working on a fix for that in the future. For now, if you want to search for a specific thread I recommend you use the advanced search page, and specify the subject line of the thread you want.
