Subject: RE: patent translation depression?
According to an article on Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported today (2/9/2010),
WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) announced the result of
their tabulation of patent applications during 2009, in particular, the top
ten applicants as follows:
Ranking Company Country Number of Applications
1 Panasonic Japan 1891
2 華為技術 China 1847
3 Robert Bosch Germany 1586
4 Philips Netherlands 1295
5 Qualcomm USA 1280
6 Erikson Sweden 1240
7 LG Electronics S. Korea 1090
8 NEC Japan 1069
9 Toyota Japan 1068
10 Sharp Japan 997
What surprised me was that companies such as Canon and Ricoh are no longer
sharing the top ten list. I thought they were the leading contenders 10
years ago among Japanese companies. Something is changing. I wonder if hay
days of image-related technology are over.

However, and I am looking at this upside-down, a graph one of them is
holding seems to show that domestic Japanese patent applications fell
something over 30% in 2009 vs 2008. Of course, it is among these that
patents are selected for overseas filing (i.e., the ones that I
translate). I tried looking this up at the JPO HP, but couldn't find
any recent statistics. Does anyone else have concrete numbers? My
income was off about 10% last year, but that is within acceptable
variation. But should I look forward to a more dramatic fall this
year? So far January and February are pretty normal. Or will
companies still file the name number of overseas patents anyway?
