Subject: RE: Caravan Car?
I once worked for a machinery manufacturer in Indianapolis, IN as a product
manager in charge of CNC machine tools (machining centers). The
owner/president of the firm was an engineer himself and was a very inventive
man, so that he came up with an idea of "caravan car" (I do not recall how
they called it and I presume that they cared less which name to use to call
it). It was a medium sized van, fully equipped with a gasoline powered
generator which provided power to a small machining center/CNC knee-type
milling machine to demonstrate how easy it is to program the machine right
on the machine, i.e., in a shop environment.
So the concept is not unique to Japan. Therefore, you may find somewhere
how they call it in U.S. Perhaps, "travelling demo van"?

Before posting this question, I check the Honyaku archives, and it seems I
was stumped with a similar question about a "caravan" in 2003, but the
question is slightly different this time.
I have to figure out how to say "キャラバンカー". What this is is a
specially outfitted truck used for special events, in this case, a
traveling exhibition of products, that opens from the side to display its
wares/allow people to try them out.
Somehow "caravan" has gotten into the Japanese lexicon, as in "日本縦断キャ
ラバン" -- a tour around the country.
Perhaps "touring van" might work, but it doesn't seem as specific as the
side-opening trucks that "caravan car" points to in Japanese? (See Google
Images)
Any suggestions?
